The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners has approved a $400 million private investment to build a four-story cargo facility at Miami International Airport (MIA), the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Scheduled for completion in 2029, this facility will increase MIA’s total cargo capacity by 50%, potentially up to two million tonnes annually, and future-proof the airport until 2041. This expansion, increasing capacity to at least 4.5 million tonnes, will keep pace with growing cargo volumes, as the airport is on track for 2.9 million tonnes this year.

The project will generate significant economic benefits, including 8,500 temporary jobs and 2,500 permanent jobs, and $512 million in revenue for Miami-Dade County over 40 years. Additionally, the facility will be environmentally friendly, with LEED silver certification and Global Infrastructure Basel’s SuRe standards certification for sustainability and resiliency.
