In accordance with all applicable rules and regulations, A.P. Moller – Maersk A/S (Maersk) and CMA CGM have chosen to collaborate on a number of decarbonization-related projects.

Both businesses are certain that working together will assist accelerate the green transition in shipping, learning from one another to go farther and quicker. Both organisations are leaders in the energy transition in shipping.

CMA CGM and Maersk have both taken bold steps to promote decarbonization for shipping, established a net-zero aim for their shipping operations, and developed scalable technologies that can have an impact in this decade.

Maersk has been placing orders for ships that can run on bio/e-methanol.

The new green alternative to existing LNG, bio/e-methane, has been ordered by CMA CGM along with boats that can run on bio/e-methanol. Both types of vessels are LNG-propelled and can also be operated on bio/e-methane.

Although these two fuel streams now seem to be the most developed among the available options, both firms anticipate that the shipping industry’s fuel mix will eventually include other streams that should be created in the upcoming years.

In particular, the shipping lines will collaborate more to advance the use of more environmentally friendly fuels for container vessel propulsion, such as:

  1. Establishing the foundation for the mass production of green fuels such as green methane and green methanol and creating high requirements for alternative sustainable, green fuels, which include the examination of whole lifecycle and related greenhouse gases.
  2. The creation and upkeep of safety and bunkering regulations for green methanol vessel operation, as well as the quickening of port preparation for bio/e-methanol supply and bunkering at major ports across the world.
  3. Continuing to collaboratively research and develop additional elements of the net zero solution, such as innovative technology for our ships or novel alternative fuels like ammonia

Two leading shipping companies to push advocacy together for the energy transition of the industry

Moreover, Maersk and CMA-CGM both agree to the fundamental role of regulation in securing the decarbonization of the sector.

Both companies warmly welcome the outcome of the recent Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization during which the IMO’s 2023 Strategy for Reducing GHG Emissions from Ships was adopted, with reinforced targets to tackle harmful emissions.

Regional measures such as the EU Fit for 55 and the Inflation Reduction Act in the US are welcomed by both companies to help stimulate demand for green shipping solutions.

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group said, “This partnership is a milestone for the decarbonization of our industry.

“By combining the know-how and the expertise of two shipping leaders, we will accelerate the development of new solutions and technologies, enabling our industry to reach its CO2 reduction targets. We are looking forward to being joined by other companies.”

Vincent Clerc, Chief Executive Officer at A.P. Moller – Maersk said,“A.P. Moller – Maersk wants to accelerate the green transition in shipping and logistics and to do so, we need strong involvement from partners across the industry.

“We are pleased to have an ally in CMA CGM and it’s a testament that when we unite through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path toward a sustainable future emerges.”
