The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), connecting JNPT Mumbai to Dadri in Haryana, is 93.2% complete. The remaining 100 km is projected to be finished by the end of next year, according to Dedicated Freight Corridor Managing Director R K Jain.

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), which runs from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, is fully complete and operational. The WDFC, at 93.2% completion, includes feeder routes serving various cement plants and major ports in Gujarat, such as Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav, and Hazira.

Currently, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) is running an average of 325 trains per day, a 60% increase from last year, with an average interchange of around 650 trains per day with Indian Railways. Over 10% of Indian Railways’ freight is now handled by the DFCC. Two Gatishakti Cargo Terminals have been commissioned at Rewari and Bhaupur, with three more notified at Daudkhan, Saradhana, and Gothangam.

According to DFCC, over 10% of the national transporter’s freight volumes are now managed by them. Jain emphasized that the completion of the DFCs will be crucial for India to reduce its logistics costs and for railways to achieve a 45% modal share in national logistics.

Jain also mentioned that the DFCC has completed the Detailed Project Report for three future freight corridors – north-south (Itarsi-Vijaywada), east coast (Kharagpur-Vijaywada), and east-west (Palghar-Dankuni), and is awaiting government approval.
