The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has received an investment proposal from Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL) for a major upgrade of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. The proposal, submitted under the Public Private Partnerships Act 2021, includes plans for a new passenger terminal building, a second runway, and refurbishment of existing facilities at JKIA, according to an official statement from Henry Ogoye, Acting MD and CEO of KAA.
“The proposal will undergo technical, financial, and legal reviews, along with the necessary due processes in compliance with the Public Private Partnerships Act 2021. The project agreement will be contingent upon stakeholder engagement, approval from the national treasury, clearance from the Attorney General, and cabinet approval,” stated Ogoye.
Ogoye also assured staff that their jobs are secure and reassured the airport business community and operators that the expanded facilities will generate additional business opportunities and benefits.
Adani’s investment represents a significant expansion of its presence in Africa, following the recent announcement on May 31, 2024, of its acquisition of a majority stake in Tanzania International Container Terminal Services (TICTS).
