DP World, a global leader in smart end-to-end supply chain solutions, has announced a major green energy initiative at its Nhava Sheva terminals. As of July 1, 2024, the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) and the Nhava Sheva India Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) are powered by a new 11 MW green energy source. This significant shift is expected to meet around 75% of NSICT’s and 80% of NSIGT’s energy needs with renewable power, resulting in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions.
Ravinder Johal, COO of Ports & Terminals Operations and Commercial for DP World’s Subcontinent, Middle East, and North Africa regions, commented, “The introduction of green power at our Nhava Sheva terminals marks a crucial step towards fulfilling our sustainability objectives. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmentally friendly practices and robust infrastructure. By adopting green energy, we are greatly reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the Government’s Maritime India Vision 2030. Our Green Port Guidelines focus on best practices, equipment electrification, and minimizing environmental impact, setting a high standard for future developments.”
In addition to this green power initiative, DP World is making strides in fleet electrification across its Indian terminals. The company has commissioned four new Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) and electrified 15 existing RTGs at the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) in Cochin, Kerala. It has also introduced two electric Quay Cranes each at the Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) in Gujarat and at ICTT, Cochin. Furthermore, three electric rail-mounted gantries have been deployed at NSICT.
These advancements are part of DP World’s broader commitment to achieving 100% electrification of its RTG fleet, which will further lower the carbon footprint of cargo operations and enhance sustainability for its customers.
Globally, DP World is striving to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company played a key role as a Principal Pathway Partner at the UN Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai, showcasing how technology and nature-based solutions can address climate change while ensuring the smooth flow of global trade.
