Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest private port operator, has strengthened its international presence with the incorporation of a new subsidiary in Oman, marking another step in its global maritime and logistics expansion.

Named Indian Ocean Gateway Terminal, the company was incorporated on October 21, 2026, through APSEZ’s wholly owned international holding structure. According to a disclosure dated October 22, the entity has a share capital of OMR 300,000, divided into 150 shares worth OMR 2,000 each. Adani International Port Holdings, Oman, holds the shares, making the new entity part of APSEZ’s wholly owned subsidiary network.

The company has not yet disclosed details of any specific port development, terminal concession, infrastructure investment or commercial agreement linked to the new entity.

Oman: A Strategic Gateway for Maritime Trade

Oman’s strategic location along the Arabian Sea positions it as an important link between Indian markets, the Persian Gulf, East Africa and global shipping networks. Its key ports, including Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, handle a range of cargo operations, supporting container shipping, industrial trade, energy exports and logistics services.

The country continues to invest in transport infrastructure and industrial development as it seeks to diversify its economy beyond hydrocarbons. For international port operators, Oman offers access to major shipping routes, regional markets and emerging logistics opportunities.

APSEZ’s latest incorporation reflects its broader ambition to strengthen its overseas footprint through subsidiaries, strategic investments and partnerships. However, the announced share capital does not represent a confirmed investment in port infrastructure, and no specific development commitment has been announced.

Building a Stronger International Port Network

APSEZ has been expanding its operations beyond India through overseas terminal investments and strategic partnerships.

In Tanzania, the group secured a 30-year concession agreement with the Tanzania Ports Authority in May 2023 to operate and manage Container Terminal 2 at Dar es Salaam Port. The terminal has four berths and an annual handling capacity of approximately one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), providing APSEZ with an operational presence in East Africa.

In Sri Lanka, APSEZ is part of the consortium developing Colombo West International Terminal alongside John Keells Holdings and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The terminal commenced operations in April 2025 under a 35-year build-operate-transfer arrangement. The project features an approximately 800-metre terminal, a 1,400-metre quay and a planned annual capacity of 3.2 million TEUs.

Colombo’s role as a major transshipment hub makes it an important gateway for cargo moving between the Indian subcontinent and international markets. Together, these overseas projects highlight APSEZ’s focus on expanding capacity, strengthening trade connectivity and building a diversified global port network.

Diversification into Marine and Offshore Services

Beyond container terminals, APSEZ has broadened its international activities across marine services and offshore support operations.

Its acquisition of a controlling interest in Astro Offshore strengthened its offshore capabilities and expanded its presence across the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. The acquisition brought a fleet of 28 offshore support vessels, including anchor-handling tugs, barges, multipurpose support vessels and workboats serving offshore energy, engineering and infrastructure projects.

The group’s marine services portfolio also includes Ocean Sparkle and other businesses involved in harbour operations and offshore support.

While Indian Ocean Gateway Terminal could serve as a platform for future maritime activities in Oman, APSEZ has not announced any direct operational connection between the new subsidiary and its existing international businesses.

The latest development underscores APSEZ’s continued efforts to broaden its international reach and strengthen its position in the global maritime and logistics sector.
