Indiaโs maritime sector is entering a new phase with Deendayal Port (Kandla), Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), Paradip Port and Mundra Port being notified as Mega Ports under the Indian Ports Act, 2025.
The move highlights the growing strategic importance of these ports in supporting Indiaโs trade, logistics and economic development. Together, they serve as key gateways for cargo movement, connecting major industrial and commercial centres with domestic and international markets.
The four ports play distinct roles across Indiaโs maritime network. Deendayal Port serves as an important gateway for cargo moving through Gujarat and northern and western India, while Jawaharlal Nehru Port is a major container-handling hub serving the Mumbai region and its wider hinterland.
On the eastern coast, Paradip Port handles significant volumes of bulk and industrial cargo, supporting trade across eastern and central India. Mundra Port has developed into a major commercial gateway with extensive cargo-handling and multimodal logistics capabilities.
The Mega Port designation reflects the governmentโs focus on strengthening port capacity, improving operational efficiency and creating infrastructure capable of supporting Indiaโs expanding trade requirements.
The initiative also aligns with efforts to modernise maritime infrastructure, enhance multimodal connectivity and establish stronger links between ports, manufacturing centres and consumption markets.
With continued investments in technology, capacity expansion and logistics connectivity, the four Mega Ports are expected to play an important role in strengthening Indiaโs supply chains and supporting its growing presence in global trade.
The notification marks an important step in Indiaโs maritime development, positioning these four gateways as key pillars of the countryโs future trade and logistics ecosystem.
