Maersk has commenced operations at a newly developed logistics centre in Germany, strategically located along the A4 motorway, one of the country’s key east-west transport corridors connecting major regions across Germany.

The company has taken a long-term lease at Panattoni Park Bad Hersfeld Ost. The facility spans 71,800 sqm of logistics space, comprising 62,800 sqm of warehouse space, 2,900 sqm of office space and 6,100 sqm of mezzanine space.

The facility in Herleshausen, Hesse, features almost 12-metre-high storage racks and has been progressively filling with products since August. Outbound operations are now underway, supporting the onward distribution of goods to delivery centres across Germany and other locations for an online retailer, according to Maersk.

The warehouse also incorporates sustainable infrastructure, including solar panels, a rainwater harvesting system and electric vehicle charging facilities.

Ole Trumpfheller, Managing Director of Maersk Area Northern Europe Continent, said the facility is expected to create between 300 and 400 permanent jobs once fully operational. During the peak online retail season from October to December, the workforce could increase to around 1,000 employees to support the smooth movement of goods.

Currently, around 150 employees are working at the Herleshausen facility, with recruitment continuing as operations expand.
