Challenge Group is expanding its international air freight network with the launch of a twice-weekly Boeing 777 freighter service to Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD), beginning 4 November 2026. The new route will connect Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) with Rockford, Illinois, via Liège Airport (LGG) in Belgium, establishing a stronger cargo link between India, Europe and the United States.

The operation will provide two-way cargo connectivity, enabling shipments from the US to move through Liège for distribution across European markets and onward transportation to India. Challenge Group will leverage its established road network in Belgium, which facilitates around 1,500 truck movements every month, to support seamless cargo distribution.

The service will focus on specialised freight categories, particularly pharmaceutical products, oversized consignments and out-of-gauge shipments. The airline group also intends to explore additional capacity and expand the service portfolio with live animal (AVI) transportation in the future.

According to Or Zak, Group Chief Commercial Officer at Challenge Group, Chicago represents a significant market for industries requiring dependable international freight solutions. The new Rockford operation is expected to create additional opportunities for customers transporting specialised shipments across the India–Europe–US trade corridor.

For RFD, the development marks another milestone in its efforts to attract global cargo operators and strengthen its position in the US air freight market. The airport is particularly focused on developing its cold-chain capabilities to accommodate temperature-sensitive shipments.

RFD is also seeking approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to handle live animal cargo. Located approximately 40 miles from animal quarantine facilities, the airport sees potential to develop this segment alongside its existing specialised cargo operations.

Rene Espinet, Vice President – Cargo Business Development at RFD, highlighted the airport’s cargo infrastructure, operational flexibility and reduced congestion as key advantages for Challenge Group. Dedicated temperature-controlled trucking will also be arranged to transport pharmaceutical shipments to destinations across the Rockford region and warehousing facilities in Chicago.

The partnership could expand beyond the initial twice-weekly schedule through additional flight frequencies and new specialised cargo services. The announcement was made at the TIACA Air Cargo Forum in Miami, held from 26–29 October 2026.
